BACKGROUND

These documents were written in 1998 to provide background information on the charity and are presented as historical documents. Positively Healthy was founded in 1986 in order to examine the multifactorial nature of AIDS. This includes obtaining the most up to date information on viruses, bacteria, fungi and other pathogens which combine to clinically constitute AIDS. Issues around new combination therapies and treatment regimes are also fully investigated.

Positively Healthy emphasises the vital importance of immuno-supportive diets and nutritional supplementation as well as the intelligent and appropriate use of medical services to treat presenting symptoms. By creating a balance between modern Western medicine, its beliefs and practices, with others such as traditional Chinese medicine, Homeopathy and Orthomolecular medicine Positively Healthy establishes a context of a will to live.

Developing a network of gay men Positively Healthy has built, and continues to build, a culture of non-toxic thinking that supports the physiological, psychological, emotional and spiritual nature of its members and the participants of its services.

Positively Healthy believes in forming networks that generate a community of ideas and support. In its long history Positively Healthy has worked with; West Midlands Regional Health Authority HIV Unit, East London and the City Health Promotion, Body Positive, The Landmark, Royal College of Nursing, Croydon & South London Body Positive, St George's and Kingston College of Health Studies and the Institute of Psychiatry.

Since 1986 Positively Healthy has developed a series of workshops entitled "Menergy". To date some 3,000 men have participated in these events and found them to be of immense personal value. The HIV Project has also evaluated these highly saying they have made " a significant impact on the health of the gay men who have undertaken them".

Further Positively Healthy organises a series of respite care weeks called "Alchemy". So far over 350 men have participated in them funded by local authorities and the THT-CRUSAID hardship fund. Evaluation of these events is available on request.

Recently Positively Healthy competed a national survey examining the precise treatments people diagnosed with HIV or AIDS are utilising. This project, the ELECTHIV PROJECT, is funded for £1 million by the European Commission in partnership with 6 Europe leading AIDS organisations.

Positively Healthy is an organisation managed and run by its users who are all HIV positive or diagnosed with AIDS.

"I will survive"

Positively Healthy, launched in 1986, was one of a few HIV/AIDS agencies in existence at the time and one of the very few to survive the next two decades. Our strength has been that what we offer matches what gay men with HIV want, or we would not have survived the test of time unlike the following named HIV/AIDS agencies or Brands who did not make it. ACE, BHAN (Black HIV/AIDS Network), Bethany Trust, Blackliners, Body Positive, Complementary Therapy Group, Continuum, Equilibrium, Frontliners, Heal Trust (funded by Elton John AIDS Foundation for £500,000), HIV Response Projects, IDT (Immune Development Trust),
Landmark, LINK, Rubberstuffers, Sanctuary and Spectrum.

We intend to be around for as long as our service-users need us. The support we have received from the European Commission and various UK statutory and voluntary sector funding and educational bodies clearly acknowledges our success and the need for us to carry on.
