This briefing paper (380kb
pdf document) is for those involved with sexual health promotion
with gay and other homosexually active men. It will not attempt
to decide the issue for the reader but instead will examine:
- how condom thickness is measured and tested
- the historical background to the issue of condom thickness
- research evidence on condom thickness
- considerations around changing policy regarding condom

| Pfizer
fraud: the Emperor's new drugs |
| |
|
Pfizer is currently (Feb '04) bombarding
doctors with advertisements for its drug Zoloft (sertraline)
as an antidote for 'social anxiety disorder'. This reminds
us of the story about that dread disease "social phobia',
which sounds like a close running mate of social anxiety disorder.
Social phobia is quite nasty, and it's almost reached epidemic
levels, according to researchers.
In fact, one million Australians alone
suffer from it! So Roche in Australia launched a drug called
Manerix to come to the aid of these million sufferers. Unfortunately,
when Roche came to find some of them to recruit into a trial,
they couldn't find anyone to participate.
Fred Nadjarian, managing director of Roche Australia,
came clean, and admitted the condition had been made up by
over-zealous marketing people, keen to create a new market.

| Psoriasis:
A link to lymphoma established |
| |
|
Here's one of those strange medical studies
that don't seem to make a lot of sense, but it's interesting
nonetheless. Researchers have discovered a very high prevalence
of lymphomas among psoriasis patients. A study group of 2,718
psoriasis patients had 276 lymphomas, a risk rate of nearly
three times above that among non-psoriasis sufferers. This
high rate didn't vary even after allowing for age, sex and
treatment. Research ers are mystified by the findings. Could
there be a link between the two conditions, or is psoriasis
merely a marker or a co-factor for a more direct cause?

Building upon our successful work with the Dept of Health,
Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the Medicines Control Agency
and with the support of the Secretary of State for Health
and the WHO, we now extend our work on behalf of gay men to
go boldly where no Gay Men's 360° Health agency has gone
before, concentrating on diet, lifestyle, immune system support
and AIDS and club drugs.

| Barebacking:
the truth they didn't want you to hear |
| |
|
Barebacking,
a sexy name for the deeply unsexy practice of
unprotected anal intercourse amongst gay men,
has in the 21st Century been described as fueling
the next wave of AIDS amongst young gay men. Clinics
are seeing clients as young as 16 who when questioned
as to thier reasons for barebacking say that as
HIV is now treatable why bother with condoms?

| The HIV
debate - scientists question HIV's role in AIDS |
| |
|
Ever
since HIV was claimed to be the cause of AIDS
at a press conference in 1984, without a single
scientific paper being published, scientists have
questioned firstly whether HIV has been properly
isolated and secondly precisely how it can cause
AIDS. The fact that the discoverers of HIV were
denied Nobel Prizes and that there is no primary
reference showing how HIV causes AIDS has fueled
the debate.
We make available documentation challenging HIV's
role in AIDS and are locating this debate firmly
in the scientific arena. Read
further documentation here.

Crystal is made of highly volatile
substances that are mixed in unknown combinations, forming
what has been described as a "mix of laundry detergent
and lighter fluid." POSH has been privileged in
linking with Lifeormeth
a special interest site warning gay men about this threat
to their lives. Gay men using Crystal tend to become
sexually passive as the drug can compromise the ability
to have erections and potentailly lead them to abuse
Viagra.
Cocaine is the longest established foundation
drug that underlies all club and sex drug abuse.

Western medicine is based on the concept
that nothing should be cured medically that can be cured
by diet (Hippocrates). In seven years of medical training
doctors receive none on diet so each individual must
conduct their own investigations as have we on their
behalf. Your immune system is literally the food you
eat, liquids you drink, drugs you take, thoughts you
think and relationships you enter into.

PN is the science and art of mind-body interaction
in preventing, stabilising and treating disease processes
using the disciplines of hard technomedicine and the
bioenergetics of green medicine (herbalism, acupuncture
etc). An article from POZ
Magazine examines why some long-term HIV diagnosed
individuals do not progress to AIDS citing PN factors
as being implicated. An article
from What Dr's Don't Tell You examines some co-factors.

We also examine the truth about CD4
counts and viral load questioning whether CD4 surrogate

America has always led on HIV research and driven the
dialogue and debate around the psychology and treatment
issues surrounding gay men and HIV. We examine concerns
about impartiality of the Federal Drug Administration
in licensing anti-HIV drugs and the vexed question of
precisely which diseases correlate with AIDS diagnoses.
We also deconstruct the American heterosexual AIDS epidemic
which has not materialised, and look at how American
far right Christian fundamentalism is jeopardising research
into sex and drugs undertaken by leading US agencies.

| Expert
Patients Programme |
| |
| The Department of Health is currently
laying the groundwork for the Expert Patients Programme (EPP)
by piloting self-management activity at all Primary Care Trusts
in England between 2002 and 2004. From 2004 to 2007 the programme
will be included in the main stream of healthcare provision
in the NHS. The EPP is a scientifically validated self-help
programme held over six weeks to train individuals living with
chronic diseases in how to self-manage their diseases. It was
created and developed by Stanford University and has achieved
recognition by the National Health Services of USA, UK as well
as globally. |
| |
| Positively Healthy offers EPP training
specifically for HIV positive gay men, and we were trained at
the inaugural session funded by the DOH in March 2002, achieving
marks of distinction as trainers. Read about
the programme here. |

Popperstoppers was originally a campaign
in the UK led by HIV positive gay men to achieve the
ban on the retail sale of poppers and was managed and
directed by Cass Mann, CEO of Positively Healthy (POSH).
It is now incorporated into the main stream work of
POSH, following approval and support for this work from
the Secretary of State for the Department of Health.
At the 2002 AIDS Conference studies were
presented linking the use of poppers to incidences of
unsafe sex occurring in the context of the new phenomonen
of "Skinny dipping".

| Oral
Sex Crimes? |
| |
|
There has been a firestorm of controversy recently
in some UK discussion forums over the issue of whether
HIV-positive gay men should disclose their status each
time they perform oral sex (blow jobs) on their partners,
whether these are one-off encounters or of longer term
duration, and what the risk is to the partner receiving
oral sex from them.
The advice from the UK national sexual health helplines
has been that, as there is no risk in the transaction
of receiving oral sex, disclosure is not necessary,
as there has not been a single case of HIV infection
resulting for the partner receiving oral sex as the
consequence of having an HIV-positive man perform the
act.

sex click here.
